Inspiration to create Nekopaw
My puppy! Just as I am a cat lover, I love to learn about animals...
and wish to have an app that can help pet owners care for their animals.
What we were about to do is called the Capstone Project.
This was a challenge to all designers to partner with one and another to create a design from scratch - any topic as long as the design is interactive in some way. At the end of our design, we would then set up a booth and present our designs to students, strangers, and future design students!
I was in thought at this moment. What should I design? I didn't need to answer that question because once two individuals contacted me - I knew that I wanted to be part of this project. Two members of my Interactive Media Design major talked to me about creating an app for pets.
Now as a dog owner, this was something that I would have personally loved to have. And through our process and features, we eventually created an app for cats - an all in one platform to help pet owners take care of their lovely companions and connect with the pet society!
Research
All three of us loved cats. So we decided to research on the market, see concerns or what pet owners want for their companion life. So we:
-
conducted interviews/surveys
-
contacted veterinaries and pet stores
-
visited adoption centers
-
researched online
And soon came up with priority needs that pet lovers would love to have!
Figma Visual Process
Our initial idea was to create an app to strengthen the communication between veterinaries and medical professionals to the public. We also wanted to interview vet staff or pet shop owners on what they would like on the app. Sadly, we realized that private businesses don't want to give away business information about pets so we decided to go with another approach.
We then wanted our target users to be general pet owners and started compiling another set of questions for them. We created questions in Google Form and sent them digitally to our Interactive Media Design cohort, UW in Discord, to people we know, and Reddit. We also took the time to place posters with out QR code out near places we could where pet owners would cross by.
Seattle Humane
Among the many other shops, adoptions, and medical institutions that we researched and went to, the two that we got the most information on were:
Seattle Humane and Whole Cat and Kaboodle Cafe.

Here we figured out our direction in helping new and regular cat owners - create an app that has different information in food, medical, social, and more!
Wireframing & Prototyping
Here we started drawing and looking at inspiration for what already existed. Then we brainstormed on ideas to make the app stand out from the current market. We started wireframing and creating low fidelity mockups in Figma, occasionally getting feedback from our cohort peers. We also decided to try prototyping in both Figma and Protopie.

Now was time to get ready for the capstone exhibition. Getting materials from stores, negotiating budgets with the department, finding locations, devices, and projectors needed for presenting the design, we got together to split on responsibilities. I managed to get some of the equipment so I started working on the visuals for the posters and marketing material! Here are the images of our capstone:
In the end, I would say that we did an amazing job and felt that we as a team all really were involved to make this project the best it can be. If I were to have more time, I would have liked to polish it more to make it a real app or even research more to have niche features added in!
But during this process, I learned how to use Protopie, which was really interesting because it had a lot of options Figma didn't have so we had more creative freedom for the interactions in our app. We also used Trello for project managing and Figma for overall brainstorm and prototyping.
This work means a lot to me because it helps me learn not only about cats but also my dog, and how much I would love to communicate with my dog companion to be the best I can be to him!
